Fastastic Guitar Music From Depapepe

Depapepe is a Japanese two-man acoustic guitar duo that plays absolutely fantastic guitar. Their music is full of life and enthusiasm. I'm am currently very fascinated by them.

It seems that some of their CDs are overpriced on amazon.com. That's some out of their more than dozen released CDs. Too many for me to list below.

Yasunori Mitsuda's Kirite Has Arrived

I've managed to locate Kirite at a reasonable price of US$20, with shipping, on eBay. Amazon was selling way to expensive and I've glad that they are out of stock.

Yasunori Mitsuda is the guy responsible for the ridiculously good Chrono Cross soundtrack as well as other game music.

This is a soundtrack for a story and some photographs. Read the Kirite entry on wikipedia.

The album has 14 songs. They contain celtic, jazz and vocals. The melody for some of the songs are really great. You can listen the album because someone uploaded the whole of it on Youtube. I was listening to that multiple times before hitting the Buy button on eBay.

Several songs from this and his other albums are adapted by Eminence Symphony Orchestra. Those are really good. If I could just get my hands on them.

I've been listening to Yasunori Mitsuda's Kirite album on youtube.com so much that I thought it would be easier if I can just create a fake album that actually plays on this entry. That way, I don't have to go to their individual pages anymore.

Maybe I'll just grab it off from eBay.

Noise Cancelling Earphones

I've bought 2 new earphones recently because I can no longer hear my podcast while travelling on the bus. I hate turning the volume way up to overpower the engine and people talking.


This is the Audio-technica QuietPoint ATH-ANC3, which I bought secondhand. It's still brand new and very well worth the money. Great at noise cancelling and provides decent music quality with some soundstage. I can listen to podcasts on my iPod at 50% or less volume level.

One day, there was these two people quarrelling loudly about 3 seats in front of me. I couldn't hear what they are arguing about. Fantastic!

The only thing I dislike is the extra part where you have to put the battery in. Too bad it can't draw power from the player itself.

This is a very good earphone for walking around. The only minor annoyance is the noise of the wires when they are knocking each other. Yes, you can hear wires, left and right, knocking each other, when you put your earphones on while walking.

It's a terrific buy for me.


The next one I bought was the Shure se530.

There is no noise cancelling mechanism but the ear buds are great at blocking out noise. So good at blocking noise that it's comparable to the white earphones above. It's like putting your fingers into your ears. At night, I can hear my own heart beat when no music is playing. Seriously. You can hear yourself breath or turn your head.

This earphone is not suitable for listening while you're on the move. Sound travels by vibration. Because of that, it actually makes this earphone not suitable when you're on the move. You can hear the wires hitting against each other and your footsteps as they hit the ground. You'll have to be stationary to enjoy the music.

As for the music quality, I thought it should feature better soundstage for its price. It's definitely much better than most earphones out there, for sure. But for that kind of price, it should offer much more.

The thing I wished was probably for music to play outside of the head, which is like the real world scenario. Earphones play music in the head. For a pricey earphones like this, it should at least be able to simulate playing music outside of the head. That's coming from after listening to my dad's old Sennheiser HD 560.

I'm looking to get the Sennheiser HD595. Quite a bargain for the price. Fantastic reviews from customers. The only downside is it doesn't ship to Singapore from amazon.com! I was stopped during the checkout process.

Amazon vs iTunes Store

Amazon.com has just launched its own mp3 download site, offering them DRM-free. Yes, read that right, DRM-free. It means you can copy the mp3 onto whatever computers or players you want regardless of the number of times!

This is a global service so if you're armed with a valid credit card, you're set to go. You'll just need a US address when they ask you to register if you haven't already had an account there. You can copy a US address anywhere.

Prices for each song is around US$0.89 to 0.99 on average, which is slightly cheaper than iTunes.

Currently, the service has around 2 million songs and counting. I have no doubt that one day the number of songs will rival that from iTunes music store.

Amazon shares are up again, to $93. Buy that too, if you're able, for it's only to go up.

Album Art's Pretty Cool

Finally managed to import all the CDs I've bought over the years, which is not much. I can't even remember some of the tunes for the songs that I used to like.

And browsing album art on iTunes full screen is pretty cool.

Allison Crowe

Now that pandora.com has shut its door to international listeners, I've switched to last.fm.

Have I mentioned that you can find free and legal music on the site? Yes, free and LEGAL and music used in a same sentence.

If you like the singing style of Sarah McLachlan or Tori Amos, you might want to check out Allison Crowe. She has made all her albums free for download on last.fm. I've since downloaded 3.

Blake Babies

Yesterday, I thought the books from Amazon were coming. The CDs came first instead, despite the email saying they were mailed a day after the books.

Here's what I've bought,



So that's 6 CDs costing SGD155 including shipping arriving after 12 days.

Update: The books came in a separate package in the afternoon.


The books I've ordered are, Stop Staring: Facial Modeling and Animation Done Right and Art of Ratatouille.

These two cost SGD114. So that's like SGD57 per book inclusive of shipping. I went down to Borders few days ago armed with a 25% discount coupon. After the discount, Art of Ratatouille cost SGD60. The other book is also much cheaper when bought from Amazon.com.

As much as I support the Singapore economy, buying books is, amazingly, cheaper from foreign countries thousands of miles away. It makes you wonder what profit margin local stores are charging during their non promotional days. And mind you, these big bookshops buy stuffs in bulk and have their own distribution channels.

With the GST going up 2% in July, it will no longer make any economic sense to buy books in Singapore. I've a Popular discount card of 10%. Effectively, it will only be 3% in July.

CDs on the other hand are more expensive but the variety on Amazon is unparalleled.

Side notes:
While I'm talking about Amazon, I must say that their stock/share price is rising and will continue to rise in the future. It now stands atUS$72. It was US30++ last year. Despite its high price, it's a strong buy. Why? If you know what Jeff Bezos is doing, you will be rest assured that it will continue to go up and stay up.

Double Dutch

My CDs have finally arrived. Light, upbeat, rhythmic indie pop. The lead singer has a nice clear and youthful voice. Actually that's the reason why I bought the CD.

The Eames Era

If you like indie pop, you'll love The Eames Era. They are currently my favourite band at the moment. Their music's upbeat, light and has great rhythm. Only got to know about them from one of their songs, Could Be Anything, which appeared in the Grey's Anatomy soundtrack. After hearing their other songs from pandora.com, I'm pretty convinced that I should buy all their 3 albums.

High -pitch Perfect

I went to 優客李林 concert yesterday. They were the popular Chinese group in the 90s until they disband. 15 years later, they come together again to put together this concert. I still remember the good old songs for I have one of the compilation CDs.


Lin Zhi Xuan's the lead singer and he was pitch perfect throughout the concert. And might I add, high-pitch perfect. The high notes at which he goes to really amazes anyone.


This is Li Ji, the guy who wrote most of the songs for 優客李林. The lyrics are really good. One of the difference between Chinese pop songs and English pop songs is the lyrics. Chinese pop songs have less 'rubbish' lyrics back then.


These are just handphones waved by fans. There were people who did brought light sticks, but not a lot. His fans are not really the light sticks kind of fans.

Tina Root

Who? I have no idea who she is too. Happened to hear her song, Yellow, stream through Pandora.com. I really like it. If you check out her website, you'll be able to find her whole album there available through streaming too.

Pandora.com is one of my favourite sites for the reason that it streams random free music. You definitely must check it out. My favourite search keyword there is "The Eames Era".
